Immersion Through Smell…

Incense.  Candles. Food.  Smell has been proven to be the most emotional of the senses.  If you are taking advantage of game themed food, the smell is already there.  Incense and candles of various scents is super powerful. Spray scents like pine and citrus can change the feel of a game.

Again, allergies.  Be careful with this one probably more than the others.  Now, there’s a few companies out there that make actual RPG candles.  Like the smell of dungeon, temple and tavern. Yeah, stay away from those.  They are stupidly expensive. Candles add nicely to your visual immersion if placed safely, and you can even find scented candles at a dollar store.  Mix a Berry scent with a Cedar scent and you have a forest. Essential oil diffusers are great, but hopefully your using them for more than gaming because it can get expensive.  Brewing various teas can provide great scents as well. The sense of smell is probably the hardest to get just right, especially because of things like leaving the forest and going to the castle and your game room still smells like pine.  Use it sparingly. But USE IT. If you’re getting candles, get some scented ones. Remember which scents match which environment. And which character. Is there a nobleman who smells like Ocean Breeze candles? Why not? Its just another layer of identification with your fictional world.
